Abstract
The disclosure describes devices and methods for asymmetrical irradiation at a body cavity or site, such as after removal of tissue, e.g. biopsy or cancer. One device includes a lumen which is off-set or off-settable from a longitudinal axis to increase the intensity of radiation received from a radiation source by a first tissue portion surrounding the body cavity and to reduce or minimize radiation received by a second tissue portion (e.g. healthy tissue) surrounding the body cavity.
Claims43
A device for treating tissue surrounding a body cavity within a patient, comprising:
- a. a distal portion which has a longitudinal axis and which is configured to be deployed within the body cavity;
- b. a treatment location at the distal portion;
- c. one or more tubular delivery members which extend along the treatment location, which have inner lumens extending therein and which are configured to be asymmetrically deployed within the body cavity so as to be closer to a first portion of tissue surrounding the body cavity;
- and
- d. a radiation source within the inner lumen of one or more of the tubular delivery members at the treatment location which irradiates the first portion of the tissue surrounding the body cavity more intensely than the opposing second portion of tissue of the body cavity due to the asymmetrical deployment.

A device for irradiating tissue surrounding a body cavity within a patient, comprising:
- a. an elongated shaft having a proximal portion, distal portion and a treatment location configured to be deployed within the body cavity;
- b. at tubular member which has an inner lumen, which extends within the treatment location at the distal portion and which is configured to be asymmetrically deployed within the body cavity so the tubular member within the treatment location is closer to a first portion of tissue surrounding the cavity than an opposing second portion of tissue surrounding the cavity;
- and
- c. a radiation source within the inner lumen at the treatment location which irradiates the first portion of the tissue surrounding the body cavity more intensely than the opposing second portion of tissue of the body cavity.
A device for irradiating tissue surrounding a body cavity within a patient, comprising:
- a. a distal portion configured to be deployed within the body cavity, having a treatment location and having a compartmented support member extending therein;
- b. a plurality of tubular members extending within the treatment location at the distal portion which are configured to be asymmetrically deployed within the body cavity away from the compartmented support member so as to be closer to a first portion of tissue surrounding the cavity than an opposing second portion of tissue surrounding the cavity;
- and
- c. a radiation source which is disposed within at least one of the tubular members at the treatment location that are configured to be asymmetrically deployed within the body cavity and which irradiates the first portion of the tissue surrounding the body cavity more intensely than the opposing second portion of tissue of the body cavity due to being closer to the first portion of tissue than the second portion of tissue.
