Abstract
The present disclosure relates to methods for treating viral hepatitis, compounds useful in the treatment of viral hepatitis, and pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds. In one embodiment, pharmaceutical compositions comprising nitazoxanide, tizoxanide, or derivatives and/or mixtures thereof are provided, as well as methods of treating hepatitis C using such compositions.
Claims45
A method of treating a patient suffering from hepatitis C comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a compound selected from nitazoxanide, tizoxanide, derivatives of nitazoxanide, and derivatives of tizoxanide, or mixtures thereof.
A method of treating a patient suffering from hepatitis C comprising:
- (a) pretreating the patient by administering to the patient for a predetermined period of time a first composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a compound selected from nitazoxanide, tizoxanide, derivatives of nitazoxanide, and derivatives of tizoxanide, or mixtures thereof;
- and (b) after the predetermined period of time, administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a second composition comprising an active agent.
A method for treating a patient suffering from viral hepatitis comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a first compound having the formula R1—NHCOR—2, wherein R1 and R2 are independently selected from moieties that provide improved stability of the NHCO group in biological fluid and tissue, provided that the compound is neither nitazoxanide nor tizoxanide.
In a method for treating a patient suffering from hepatitis C with a therapeutically effective amount of an interferon, the improvement comprises administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of nitazoxanide, tizoxanide, or mixtures thereof.
A composition comprising:
- (a) one or more compounds selected from nitazoxanide, tizoxanide, derivatives of nitazoxanide, and derivatives of tizoxanide;
- (b) an interferon;
- and (c) an anti-diabetes agent.
