Abstract
The present invention generally relates to plant extracts obtainable by extracting various plant materials with an alkaline agent, to methods for preparing such extracts, to compositions comprising such extracts, and to methods for using the extracts or compositions thereof.
Claims57
A plant extract obtained by extraction of plant material with an alkaline solution, whereby said extract comprises one or more phenolic polymers.
A plant extract obtained by:
- a) heat extracting defatted ground plant material with an alkaline solution comprising an alkaline agent;
- b) removing particulate matter with an average particle size greater than about 0.2 μm leaving a supernatant;
- c) adjusting pH of the resulting supernatant to about 6.0 to about 8.0;
- d) filtrating the supernatant to obtain a retentate fraction;
- e) drawing off the retentate fraction and removing particles with an average molecular mass of less than about 10 kDa;
- and
- f) suspending the retentate fraction in an aqueous solvent having a pH of about 6 to about 8 comprising alkaline agent.
A method for producing a cellular extract, comprising the steps of:
- a) heat extracting defatted ground plant material with an alkaline solution;
- b) removing particulate matter having an average particle size greater than about 0.2 μm leaving a remaining supernatant;
- c) adjusting pH of the remaining supernatant to about 6.0 to about 8.0;
- d) filtrating the supernatant to obtain a retentate fraction;
- e) drawing off the retentate fraction and removing particles with an average molecular mass of less than 10 kDa;
- and
- f) suspending the retentate fraction in an aqueous solvent having a pH of about 8 to about to 6 and comprising an alkaline solution.
A kit for vaccination and/or therapy comprising (a) a vaccine or medicament and (b) a lignin compound.
A method of vaccinating a vertebrate against cancer and/or viral infection comprising administering to the vertebrate an extract obtained by extraction of plant material with an alkaline solution, whereby said extract comprises a lignin compound.
A method of treating a vertebrate for cancer and/or viral infection comprising administering to the vertebrate the extract obtained by extraction of plant material with a solution of potassium hydroxide, whereby said extract comprises potassium.
A method for producing immature and/or mature dendritic and/or fibrocyte cells, comprising exposing cells selected from the group consisting of blood mononuclear cells, thymocytes, spelocytes, umbilical cord blood cells, bone marrow cells, CD34+-cells, CD14+-cells or mixtures thereof to an effective amount of extract obtained by extracting plant material with an alkaline solution.
A method for producing myeloid dendritic cells, comprising exposing peripheral blood mononuclear cells to an effective amount of plant extract obtained by extracting plant material with an alkaline agent.
A method for enhancing immune response in a vertebrate subject in need thereof, the method comprising:
- increasing an amount of one or more immunogens in the vertebrate subject;
- and administering to the vertebrate subject an alkaline extract obtained by extraction of a plant with a solution of alkaline agent.
A method of improving an immune response in a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal a polynucleotide molecule and a plant extract, wherein the extract is obtained by extraction of plant with a solution comprising an alkaline agent.
A kit comprising a composition capable of increasing an amount of one or more immunogens in a vertebrate and an adjuvant comprising a plant extract obtained by extraction of pine cone with an alkaline solution.
A method for developing an antigen-specific memory response in a mammal comprising administering to the mammal a plant extract, said extract being obtained extraction of plant with an alkaline solution.
A method of boosting an antigen-specific response in a mammal comprising administering to the mammal a plant extract, said extract being obtained by extraction of a plant with an alkaline solution.
