Abstract
A magnetic recording medium includes a substrate and a first side. The substrate defines a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The first side extends over the first surface of the substrate and includes a diamond-like carbon (DLC) layer. The DLC layer includes a DLC lubricant.
Claims20
A magnetic recording medium comprising:
- a substrate defining a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface;
- and
- a first side extending over the first surface of the substrate and including a diamond-like carbon (DLC) layer, wherein the DLC layer includes a DLC lubricant.
A deposition system for depositing a diamond-like carbon (DLC) layer on a magnetic recording medium including a magnetic layer, the coating system comprising:
- a supply roll configured to selectively maintain the magnetic recording medium;
- a take-up roll spaced from the supply roll and configured to receive the magnetic recording medium from the supply roll, wherein the magnetic recording medium is configured to be advanced from the supply roll to the take-up roll along a medium path;
- a deposition station positioned along the medium path and being configured to deposit at least a portion of the DLC layer including a DLC lubricant over the magnetic recording medium;
- and
- a vacuum chamber housing at least a portion of the medium path and the deposition station.
2 more elements
A method of forming an elongated magnetic recording medium, the method comprising:
- advancing a magnetic recording medium along a path contained within a vacuum chamber, the magnetic recording medium including a substrate and a magnetic recording layer;
- and
- depositing at least a portion of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) layer including a DLC lubricant over the magnetic recording medium at a deposition station, wherein the deposition station is positioned within the vacuum chamber and along the path, and further wherein the DLC lubricant is deposited to define an outermost surface of the magnetic recording medium.
