A process for oxidation of cyclic saturated hydrocarbons having from 5 to 8 carbon atoms or of benzene, optionally substituted by one or more lower alkyl groups, to produce a product comprising a corresponding alcohol, ketone, aldehyde and/or carboxylic acid, comprising contacting the hydrocarbon with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst comprising a microporous solid support having from 8- to 12-ring open windows and comprising non-framework metal cations selected from manganese, iron, cobalt, vanadium, chromium, copper, nickel, ruthenium, and mixtures thereof, providing that the oxygen-containing gas does not contain significant amounts of added hydrogen.
