Abstract
When an area corresponding to area information is determined to use a default font, an ECU displays characters by using the default font stored in a ROM. When an area corresponding to area information is determined to not use a default font, the ECU reads out an exclusive font corresponding to the area to store it in a RAM, and displays characters by using the exclusive font stored in the RAM.

A map display device comprising:
- a display;
- a map data storage unit that stores map data covering an area;
- a font storage unit that stores a plurality of fonts;
- and
- a display control unit that
- selects, from the plurality of fonts, a font corresponding to the area covered by the map data, and
- causes the display to display (i) a map based on the map data and (ii) a character by using the selected font.
