Abstract
Methods and apparatus are provided for determining the cause of tire pressure change. The method comprises obtaining a first tire pressure (P1) at a first tire temperature (T1) and obtaining a measured second tire pressure (P2) at a second tire temperature (T2). The tire pressure is then estimated (Pest) at the second tire temperature (T2) and the estimated tire pressure (Pest) is compared to the second tire pressure (P2). A diagnostic message is then generated indicative of the cause of tire pressure change, the diagnostic message being responsive to the comparing of the measured second tire pressure (P2) with the estimated tire pressure (Pest).

A method for determining the cause of tire pressure change, comprising:
- obtaining a first tire pressure (P1) for a first tire temperature (T1);
- obtaining a measured second tire pressure (P2) for a second tire temperature (T2);
- calculating an estimated tire pressure (Pest) for the second tire temperature (T2);
- comparing the estimated tire pressure (Pest) to the measured second tire pressure (P2);
- and
- generating a diagnostic message indicative of the cause of tire pressure change, the diagnostic message being responsive to the comparing step.
A method for determining the cause of tire pressure change from a first tire temperature (T1) to a second tire temperature (T2), comprising:
- estimating tire pressure (Pest) for the second tire temperature (T2);
- measuring a second tire pressure (P2) for the second tire temperature (T2);
- comparing the estimated tire pressure (Pest) to the second tire pressure (P2);
- if the estimated tire pressure (Pest) is equivalent to the second tire pressure (P2), indicating that the pressure change is due to temperature;
- and
- if the estimated tire pressure (Pest) is not equivalent to the second tire pressure (P2), indicating that the pressure change is due to air loss.
A tire pressure system, comprising:
- a tire pressure sensor capable of measuring tire pressure;
- a tire temperature sensor capable of measuring tire temperature;
- processing logic capable of estimating and comparing tire pressures at different temperatures for determining the cause of tire pressure change.
