Abstract
Methods of evaluating treatments for vascular disease are described. The treatments can include administration of pharmaceutical, chemical, or biological agents. Vascular tissue is removed from a first site in a vascular lumen and optionally analyzed. A treatment is administered to the patient, followed by removal of a second portion of vascular tissue from a second site. The vascular tissue from both the first and second site are compared to learn the effect of the treatment. Treatments can include placement of prosthetic devices such as stents in the lumen. Whether or not the vascular tissue recurs at a site after removal can be monitored as a measure of the success of a given treatment.
Claims38
A method of evaluating a treatment of a patient having vascular disease comprising the steps of:
- removing a first sample of tissue from a vascular lumen of the patient;
- analyzing at least one property of the tissue;
- administering a treatment to the patient;
- removing a second sample of tissue from a vascular lumen of the patient,
- analyzing the at least one property of the second sample,
- comparing properties of the first and second samples to determine an effect of the treatment on the patient.
The method of claim I wherein the property is selected from the group consisting of:
- presence of a marker, level of a marker, modification of a marker, activity of a protein, activity of an RNA, transcription, translation, ligand binding, cellular activity, proliferation, inflammation, and infection.
A method of evaluating an effect of a treatment on a patient having vascular disease comprising the steps of:
- removing tissue from a site in a vascular lumen in a patient;
- administering a treatment to the patient;
- monitoring the patient for recurrence of the tissue at the site in the vascular lumen,
- identifying an effect of the treatment if the tissue does not recur at the site.
A method of determining if a test molecule localizes in tissue in a vascular lumen, comprising the steps of:
- introducing a test molecule having a detectable tag into vasculature of a patient having vascular disease;
- removing a sample of tissue from a vascular lumen of the patient;
- determining the presence and/or amount of the test molecule having the detectable tag in the tissue.
A method of evaluating a treatment of a patient having vascular disease, comprising the steps of:
- introducing an atherectomy catheter percutaneously in the patient and directing the catheter to a first site in a vascular lumen containing tissue;
- removing a first sample of tissue from the vascular lumen of the patient;
- analyzing at least one property of the vascular tissue;
- administering a treatment to the patient;
- reintroducing an atherectomy catheter percutaneously in the patient and directing the catheter to a second site in a vascular lumen containing tissue;
- removing a second sample of tissue from vascular lumen of the patient,
- analyzing the at least one property of the second sample,
- comparing properties of the first and second samples to determine an effect of the treatment on the patient.
