Abstract
An improved aqueous slurry composition for the plasticizing of polyvinyl acetal resins whereby salts, acids and/or bases are used to enhance absorption rates of the plasticizer into the resin, and a process therewith for the production of plasticized polyvinyl acetal resins.
Claims21
A slurry comprising a polyvinyl acetal, a water-insoluble or sparingly soluble plasticizer, water, and an ionizable additive, which ionizable additive provides a means to accelerate absorption of the plasticizer into the polyvinyl acetal.
A process for the production of plasticized polyvinyl acetal comprising the step of (a) producing an aqueous slurry comprising a polyvinyl acetal, a water-insoluble or sparingly soluble plasticizer, water, and an ionizable additive, (b) plasticizing the polyvinyl acetal by the polyvinyl acetal absorbing the water-insoluble or sparingly soluble plasticizer, and (c) isolating the plasticized polyvinyl acetal.
An aqueous slurry comprising a resin phase and aqueous phase in ratio of resin phase:aqueous phase of 10:90 to about 25:75 wherein the resin phase comprises polyvinyl acetal and a water-insoluble or sparingly soluble plasticizer and the aqueous phase comprises water and an ionizable additive which comprises at least one of a water-soluble ionizable acid, salt base, or buffer system.
