Abstract
A method for detection and prognosis of breast cancer and other types of cancer. The method comprises detecting expression, if any, for both an Id-1 and an Id-2 genes, or the ratio thereof, of gene products in samples of breast tissue obtained from a patient. When expressed, Id-1 gene is a prognostic indicator that breast cancer cells are invasive and metastatic, whereas Id-2 gene is a prognostic indicator that breast cancer cells are localized and noninvasive in the breast tissue.

1-43. (canceled)
A method for assessing metastatic or invasive properties of a malignant epithelial tissue comprising assessing Id-1 protein, said method comprising:
- obtaining a sample of malignant epithelial tissue;
- determining expression of Id-1 protein in said sample;
- and,
- evaluating the results of the determining step, whereby presence of Id-1 expression in the sample indicates a more invasive or a more metastatic cancer,
- wherein the Id-1 protein is that expressed from human genetic locus 20q11, is a protein specifically bound by an antibody that specifically binds the protein sequence set forth in FIG. 16 (SEQ ID No. 1) or comprises the protein sequence set forth in FIG. 16 (SEQ ID No. 2).
A kit for use in determining metastatic or invasive properties of a malignant epithelial tissue, said method comprising:
- a means for detecting Id-1 expression product, wherein the means for detecting Id-1 expression product are contacted with the malignant epithelial tissue;
- whereby,
- when Id-1 is expressed, the means for detecting Id-1 expression forms an Id 1/detecting means complex;
- whereby presence of the Id-I/detecting means complex indicates a property of the malignant epithelial tissue to invade or metastasize.
A kit for use in determining metastatic or invasive properties of an epithelial tissue, said method comprising:
- a means for detecting Id-1 expression product, wherein the means for detecting Id-1 expression product are contacted with the epithelial tissue;
- whereby,
- when Id-1 is expressed, the means for detecting Id-1 expression forms an Id 1/detecting means complex;
- whereby presence of the Id-I/detecting means complex indicates a property of the epithelial tissue to invade or metastasize.
