## Abstract

A disinfectant delivery system and method of providing alcohol-free disinfection to a body to be disinfected, as well as a method of infection reduction by preparation of a patient before an invasive procedure. A blended cloth comprising first fibers and second fibers is provided with the first fibers generally being greater in quantity by weight than the second fibers. A disinfectant solution impregnates the blended cloth, with the disinfectant solution having chlorhexidine gluconate as an active ingredient and having no alcohol. In the method according to the invention, at least one impregnated blended cloth is used to disinfect at least a portion of a body. A plurality of blended cloths can be provided for disinfecting discrete portions of the body. When an invasive procedure is to be performed on a patient, a further method according to the invention of infection reduction comprises using a CHG-impregnated cloth to disinfect at least a portion of the patient at least one day prior to the invasive procedure proximate the location of the invasive procedure.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of infection reduction by preparation of a patient before an invasive procedure, comprising
a. providing a blended cloth comprising a fibrous mat impregnated with a disinfecting solution having chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) as an active ingredient and having no alcohol, and
b. using the impregnated cloth to disinfect at least a portion of the patient up to several days prior to the invasive procedure proximate the location of the invasive procedure, and
c. releasing substantially all of the CHG from the fibrous mat during step b.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, in which method step “a” comprises providing a blended cloth comprising first fibers and second fibers, with the quantity by weight of said first fibers generally being greater than the quantity by weight of said second fibers, said blended cloth having an absorbency by weight greater than the weight of said blended cloth.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, in which step “a” comprises providing a plurality of said blended cloths in a package, and step “b” comprises using each cloth to disinfect a discrete portion of the patient.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1 including the further step of using the disinfecting solution a further time immediately prior to the invasive procedure.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1 in which said cloth consists of polyester fibers.

### Claim 6

A method of infection reduction by preparation of a patient before an invasive procedure, comprising
a. providing a blended cloth comprising a fibrous mat composed of polyester fibers impregnated with a disinfecting solution having chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) as an active ingredient and having no alcohol, and
b. using the impregnated cloth to disinfect at least a portion of the patient at least one day prior to, and up to several days prior to, the invasive procedure proximate the location of the invasive procedure.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6, in which method step “a” comprises providing a blended cloth comprising first fibers and second fibers, with the quantity by weight of said first fibers generally being greater than the quantity by weight of said second fibers, said blended cloth having an absorbency by weight greater than the weight of said blended cloth.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6, in which step “a” comprises providing a plurality of said blended cloths in a package, and step “b” comprises using each cloth to disinfect a discrete portion of the patient.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6, in which step “b” includes releasing substantially of the CHG from the fibrous mat.

### Claim 10 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6 including the further step of using the disinfecting solution a further time immediately prior to the invasive procedure.

### Claim 11

A method of infection reduction by preparation of a patient before an invasive procedure, comprising
a. providing a first blended cloth comprising a fibrous mat impregnated with a first disinfecting solution having chlorohexidine gluconate (CHG) as an active ingredient and having no alcohol, and
b. using the first impregnated cloth to disinfect at least a portion of the patient at least one day prior to, and up to several days prior to, the invasive procedure proximate the invasive procedure,
c. providing a second blended cloth comprising a fibrous mat impregnated with a second disinfecting solution having chlorohexidine gluconate (CHG) as an active ingredient and having no alcohol, and
d. using the second impregnated cloth to disinfect at least a portion of the patient immediately prior to the invasive procedure proximate the invasive procedure, wherein the first blended cloth comprises first fibers and second fibers, with the quantity by weight of said first fibers generally being greater than the quantity by weight of the second fibers, said first blended cloth having an absorbency by weight greater than the weight of said first blended cloth, and
wherein the second blended cloth comprises first fibers and second fibers, with the quantity by weight of said first fibers generally being greater than the quantity by weight of the second fibers, said second blended cloth having an absorbency by weight greater than the weight of said second blended cloth.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, in which the first fibers of the first blended cloth comprise polyester fibers.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, in which the second fibers of the first blended cloth comprise polyester fibers.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, in which the first fibers of the second blended cloth comprise polyester fibers.

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, in which the second fibers of the second blended cloth comprise polyester fibers.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, wherein substantially all of the CHG in the first disinfecting solution is released from the first blended cloth during the method step “b”.

### Claim 17 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, wherein substantially all of the CHG in the second disinfecting solution is released from the second blended cloth during the method step “d”.
