Systems for charging a battery in a closed loop configuration

A portable electronic device having a battery, said portable electronic device adapted to have said battery charged by an AC adapter, said portable electronic device comprising:

• a system power bus operatively connected to the AC adapter;
• a first control loop that dynamically adjusts the AC adapter output to the battery in response to at least one first parameter of the system exceeding an associated predetermined threshold;
• and
• a second control loop including a protection circuit that activates to protect the system when at least one second parameter of the system exceeds an associated predetermined threshold, until the AC adapter output reaches a predetermined value.

A system for charging a battery with an AC adapter, said system including a system power bus operatively connected to the AC adapter, said system comprising:

• a first monitoring means for monitoring at least one parameter of the system, the parameter including one of the charging current of the battery, the battery voltage, the adapter current, the adapter voltage, and the voltage at the system power bus;
• a control means for dynamically adjusting the AC adapter output to the battery in response to the at least one parameter monitored by said first monitoring means, wherein said control means reduces the AC adapter output when the at least one parameter monitored by said first monitoring means exceeds an associated predetermined threshold;
• and
• a second monitoring means for monitoring at least one parameter of the system, the parameter including one of the charging current of the battery, the battery voltage, and the voltage at a system power bus;
• protection means responsive to the at least one parameter monitored by said second monitoring means for protecting the system until the AC adapter output reaches a predetermined value, wherein said protection means activates to protect the system when the at least one parameter monitored by said second monitoring means exceeds an associated predetermined threshold.
