A light sensor is adapted to detect the amount of ambient light adjacent the footwear. The footwear may also include an energy storage element for powering the light source and maintaining the light source in the ON state for a period of time after the foot is removed. A selector may be provided for selecting a mode of operation, such as OFF, Auto ON and ON. In another embodiment, footwear is provided that includes a tag that is removably coupled to the footwear by a hook and loop fastener.
