Abstract
A method, computer program product, and distributed data processing system for directly destroying the resources associated with one or more virtual adapters that reside within a physical adapter is provided. A mechanism is provided for directly destroying the resources associated with one or more virtual adapters that reside within a physical adapter, such as a PCI, PCI-X, or PCI-E adapter.
Claims20
A method of destroying a virtual adapter in a logically partitioned data processing system, the method comprising the computer implemented steps of:
- invoking a request to destroy at least one virtual adapter allocated on a physical adapter;
- conveying the request to the physical adapter;
- and
- responsive to receipt of the request by the physical adapter, freeing resources allocated to the virtual adapter on the physical adapter, wherein any data in the resources is purged when the resources are freed.
A computer program product in a computer readable medium for destroying a virtual adapter in a logically partitioned data processing system, the computer program product comprising:
- first instructions for receiving a request to destroy at least one virtual adapter allocated on a physical adapter;
- second instructions that convey the request to the physical adapter;
- and
- third instructions, responsive to receipt of the request by the physical adapter, that free resources allocated to the at least one virtual adapter, wherein any data maintained in the resources is purged when the resources are freed.
A logically partitioned data processing system, comprising:
- a physical adapter having a plurality of allocated virtual adapters;
- a memory that contains a plurality of system images each respectively associated with a one of the plurality of virtual adapters;
- a store containing a logical partitioning manager as a set of instructions;
- and
- a processor that, responsive to execution of the instructions, generates a request to destroy at least one virtual adapter of the plurality of virtual adapters allocated on the physical adapter and that conveys the request to the physical adapter, wherein the physical adapter frees resources allocated to the virtual adapter, wherein any data in the resources is purged when the resources are freed.
