Disclosed is a method for treating acute pancreatitis in a subject. The method comprises the step of administering to the subject an effective amount of an ester of an alpha-ketoalkanoic acid or an amide of an alpha-ketoalkanoic acid.

A method of treating acute pancreatitis in a subject, said method comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of an ester of an alpha-ketoalkanoic acid, an amide of an alpha-ketoalkanoic acid or an alpha-ketoalkanoic acid or salt thereof.
A method of treating acute pancreatitis, said method comprising administering to a subject an effective amount of ethyl pyruvate.
