Abstract
Embodiments of the present invention provide for apparatus and methods for performing unload operations, including enabling read/write heads to reach a desired velocity at the ramp. Embodiments of the present invention are particularly beneficial for handheld products where low power consumption and reliability are important requirements.
Claims22
A method for unloading read/write heads in a disc drive, comprising:
- holding the read/write heads at an initial position over a disc, and
- moving the read/write heads towards a ramp disposed adjacent to the disc according to a first velocity profile to reach a target velocity at the ramp.
An unload method comprising:
- positioning read/write heads over a track of a disc;
- allowing the read/write heads to reach an initial velocity at the track, and
- bringing the read/write heads to a target velocity upon reaching a ramp configured to park the read/write heads.
A disc drive comprising:
- a disc having at least one recordable region thereon;
- a ramp adjacent the disc;
- a motor;
- an actuator arm operable by the motor;
- read/write heads supported by the actuator arm;
- and
- circuitry operably connected to the motor, the circuitry being configured to bring the actuator arm to a known velocity with the read/write heads being at the recordable region before operating the motor according to a voltage profile for moving the actuator arm towards the ramp.
