Abstract
A projection display may include a spatial light modulator that receives light from a light source via an analog modulator. The analog modulator may be a liquid crystal device. The bit depth may be increased by modulating the light from the lamp, for example to account for different pixel luminance levels.
Claims30
A method comprising:
- producing an illuminating beam for a projection display;
- and
- modulating the illuminating beam to create different tonal resolution ranges for the pixel intensity.
An apparatus comprising:
- a spatial light modulator to modulate a beam of light to establish a pixel intensity;
- a lamp to produce said beam of light;
- and
- a single pixel analog modulator between said lamp and said spatial light modulator to modulate the beam to create different tonal resolution ranges for the pixel intensity.

A rear projection display comprising:
- a lamp to produce a beam of light;
- a single pixel analog modulator to modulate said beam of light to create different tonal resolution ranges for pixel intensity;
- a polarization beam splitter coupled to receive the output from said modulator;
- and
- a spatial light modulator.
