Abstract
A system for providing trickplay functionality—such as pause, instant replay, rewind, fast forward, etc—for very highly compressed video/audio data stream. Depending on the trickplay functionality, the system configures the duration of playback before a jump, the decoding speed required, the number of pictures to display per second, and the distance between jumps. The system may comprise a decoder, a picture rate controller and a display.
Claims36
A method of displaying a video bitstream comprising the steps of:
- receiving a compressed video bitstream wherein the video bitstream includes a plurality of frames;
- decoding the plurality of frames to provide uncompressed frames;
- selecting a trickplay video display mode;
- selecting one or more uncompressed frames to be displayed depending on the trickplay video display mode;
- and
- displaying the selected one or more uncompressed frames in the trickplay video display mode.
A system of displaying a video bitstream, comprising:
- a decoder that receives compressed frames and decoding the compressed frames;
- a trickplay controller connected to the decoder selecting one or more compressed frames depending on a trickplay mode;
- and
- a display connected to the trickplay controller displaying the selected frames in the trickplay mode.
A method of providing media services over a network, the method comprising:
- receiving a request from one of a plurality of boxes (hereinafter “ordering box”), the request including an order of a title;
- identifying one or more of the boxes other than the ordering box to provide distributed segments pertaining to the title to the ordering box, wherein the ordering box proceeds with downloading the distributed segments, and a playback of the title based on the distributed segments together with residing segments, if any, is started or continued;
- selecting a trickplay video display mode;
- and
- displaying the title in the trickplay video display mode.
A system of providing media services over a network, the system comprising:
- a server coupled to a network and configured to manage the medial services;
- a plurality of boxes coupled to the network, wherein one of the boxes (hereinafter “ordering box”) initiating a request including an order of a title communicates directly with the server;
- a decoder residing at the ordering box that receives compressed frames and decoding the compressed frames;
- a picture rate controller connected to the decoder selecting one or more compressed frames depending on a trickplay mode;
- and
- a display connected to the picture rate controller displaying the selected frames in the trickplay mode.
