Method and system for shredding data within a data storage subsystem

A computer-readable medium encoded with a computer program, which when executed by a processor, causes said processor to implement a method for continually shredding data within a data storage subsystem, said method comprising:

• rendering all data of a first storage element permanently unreadable;
• performing a data shred process in response to rendering all data of said first storage element permanently unreadable, wherein said performing comprises,
• selecting a second storage element, wherein said second storage element comprises a first storage object to be preserved and a second storage object to be shredded
• causing data of said first storage object to be stored within said first storage element;
• and
• rendering all data of said second storage element permanently unreadable in response to said causing.

A system for continually shredding data within a data storage subsystem, said system comprising:

• a storage device to store a first storage element and a second storage element, wherein said second storage element comprises a first storage object to be preserved and a second storage object to be shredded;
• a first processing module coupled to said storage device to process requests to access said first storage element and said second storage element;
• and
• a second processing module coupled to said storage device to perform a data shred process by virtue of being configured to select said second storage element,
• cause data of said first storage object to be stored within said first storage element;
• and
• render all data of said second storage element permanently unreadable in response to a storage of said first storage object within said first storage element.
