In the present invention the instantaneous supply of power to a driving machine (12) is measured and recorded as a function of time. Based on mechanical design considerations, a dynamic physical power-flow model (26) of the driven apparatus (10) is created. The model (26) represents a course of events, at least partly aperiodic, and is described by means of parameters directly connected to mechanical and/or electromagnetic quantities of the individual components of the apparatus (10). The parameters are adapted in order to fit the power consumption calculated from the model to be recorded power signatures. A diagnosis is performed based on the adapted parameters. The power signatures are preferably analysed within separate time domains, associated with different part events of the apparatus operation. The model (26) preferably comprises components associated with ideal operation as well as of possible predicted faults, however, no pre-recorded sample power signals have to be provided.
