## Abstract

Transgenic guayule lines were created by constitutively expressing transgenes that encode for prenyltransferase and allylic diphosphate synthase. These new lines are important to rubber production because they result in plants that produce latex rubber which is lower in guayulin, a compound that produces a skin irritation in some animals. Controlling prenyltransferase production also permits the control of the production of resin by the plants, which has important industrial implications. Additionally, prenyltransferase manipulation can result in latex particles of different size, containing rubber of different molecular weight, which is also significant to industrial production. Although the elevated prenyltransferase activity in the transgenic lines resulted in shorter rubber molecules, the number of rubber molecules made by these transgenic lines was increased.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A transgenic guayule plant.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The plant of claim 1, wherein the transgenic modification results in an increased level of allylic diphosphate initiators over non-transgenic guayule.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The plant of claim 1, wherein the transgenic modification results in an increased activity of prenyltransferase over non-transgenic guayule.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The plant of claim 1, wherein the transgenic modification results in an increased level of allylic diphosphate initiators and increased activity of prenyltransferase.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The plant of claim 1, wherein the transgenic modification results in reduced amounts of guayulins over non-transgenic guayule.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The plant of claim 1, wherein the transgenic modification results in increased amounts of resin over non-transgenic guayule.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The plant of claim 1, wherein the transgenic modification results in increased production of rubber molecules over non-transgenic guayule.

### Claim 8

A process of modifying the metabolism of Parthenium argentatum Gray comprising the steps of:
(a) transforming a plant cell of Parthenium argentatum Gray with a recombinant DNA molecule comprising a vector operatively linked to a DNA segment that encodes a polypeptide having metabolic activity, and a promoter suitable for driving the expression of said polypeptide in said plant cell to form a transformed plant cell; and
(b) regenerating said transformed plant cell in a Parthenium argentatum Gray plant, thereby creating a transgenic plant.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The process of claim 7, wherein the polypeptide shows activity for prenyltransferase.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The process of claim 7, wherein the polypeptide shows activity for allylic diphosphate initiators.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

A hybrid plant which has at least one parent plant according to claim 1, said hybrid plant overaccumulating rubber molecules and resin in comparison to a native plant which is not the progeny of a transformed plant.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

A hybrid plant which has at least one parent plant according to claim 1, said hybrid plant overexpressing prenyltransferase or allylic diphosphate initiators in comparison to a native plant which is not the progeny of a transformed plant.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

A hybrid plant which has at least one parent plant according to claim 1, said hybrid plant underproducing guayulins in comparison to a native plant which is not the progeny of a transformed plant.
