Abstract
Tramadol or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is used in the manufacture of a pharmaceutical preparation for the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome.

A method of treating irritable bowel syndrome comprising administering an effective amount of tramadol or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a human in need thereof.

The method according to claim 11 wherein the tramadol or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof comprises (1RS,2RS)-Tramadol optionally with a minor impurity of (1RS,2SR) Tramadol, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
The method according to claim 11 wherein the tramadol or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is in the form of one of its enantiomers.
