Abstract
The invention is directed to a pill cutter that has a protected cutting edge. The pill cutter includes a guard, a base, and a cover. The components are arranged such that the guard slides over the cutting edge when the pill cutter is in an open position and the guard exposes the cutting edge when the pill cutter is in a closed position. The invention is also directed at a method for assembling the pill cutter and a method of using the pill cutter to cut a pill or tablet.
Claims23
A tablet cutter comprising:
- a base;
- a cover pivotally attached to the base;
- and
- a blade guard movably coupled to the cover such that the blade guard moves relative to the cover when the cover is pivoted relative to the base.
A tablet cutter comprising:
- a guide plate that slides over a blade such that when the tablet cutter is biased toward an open position for receiving a tablet into a cutting position relative to the blade the guide plate automatically slides toward the blade, and when the tablet cutter is biased toward a closed position the guide plate automatically slides away from the blade such that the blade can cut the tablet.
A method of assembling a tablet cutter comprising the steps of:
- providing a blade, a blade guard, and a cover;
- fixedly attaching the blade to the cover;
- and
- slidably attaching the guard to the cover;
- wherein the guard is configured to slidably move between a first position covering the blade and a second position in which the blade is exposed for cutting.
A method of cutting a tablet comprising the steps of:
- providing a tablet cutter that includes a guard plate, a blade, a cover, and a base coupled to the cover, wherein the blade is fixedly attached to the cover and the cover is slidably attached to the guard plate;
- positioning a tablet in the base;
- moving the guard plate between a first position covering the blade and a second position in which the blade is exposed for cutting;
- pivoting the cover toward the base until the blade passes through the tablet.
A tablet cutter comprising:
- a base including a tablet cutting surface;
- a cover pivotally attached to the base;
- a blade positioned between the cover and the base;
- and
- a guard plate positioned between the cover and the base, the guard plate being configured and arranged to move between a first position covering the blade when the cover is pivoted away from the base, and a second position wherein the blade is exposed when the cover is pivoted toward the base.
