Abstract
A system and method for synchronizing a database having metadata and raw data. Metadata may be fully synchronized between two systems, with copies stored on both systems. Raw data may be selectively synchronized, so that a client system need not store all of the raw data locally. When disconnected, the client system may identify certain portions of the raw data to store locally, and such data may be synchronized when reconnected to a server system.
Claims28
A system comprising:
- a first group of files;
- a first group of items, at least one of said items being a file backed item that comprises metadata derived from one of said first group of files that is associated with said file backed item;
- a first system having a first data store comprising said file and said first group of items;
- a second system having a second data store and adapted to:
- while connected with said first system, synchronize said group of items between said first data store and said second data store, and synchronize a previously identified subset of said first group of files;
- while disconnected with said first system, identify at least one of said first group of files to synchronize, wherein said at least one of said first group of files is not a member of said subset;
- and
- when subsequently connected to said first system, synchronize said at least one of said first group of files.

A method comprising:
- storing a file in a first file store on a first system;
- creating metadata relating to said file in an item store on said first system, said metadata being derived from the contents of said file and contained in a file backed item;
- connecting a second system to said first system, said second system having a second file store and a second item store, and while connected, synchronizing said first item store with said second item store;
- disconnecting said second system from said first system, and while disconnected, identifying said file to synchronize upon reconnect;
- and
- reconnecting said second system to said first system, and while connected, synchronizing said file from said first file store to said second file store.
