Abstract
An automated process that can produce targets of any density gradient along an axial and a radial coordinate is explored. Such an approach is based on the observation that particles of different size, shape and density settle in fluid-filled columns differently. The invention presents models and procedures to automate the process so as to obtain any combination of density gradients.
Claims26
A system for producing variable density objects, comprising:
- a container, further comprising:
- an outer surface having a top edge and a bottom edge;
- and a base portion having a degree of curvature and cooperating with said bottom edge of said outer surface to form a fluid medium enclosure;
- a fluid medium having a desired viscosity and density disposed within said container;
- and
- a mixture of predetermined particles introduced into said fluid medium at said top edge, wherein said particles comprise one or more materials having different shapes, densities and diameters so as to be arranged by differential settling in said fluid medium to produce an object having a desired axial and a desired radial variable density.

A variable density object, comprising:
- a first zone arranged in a curved shape, said first zone further comprising a mixture of predetermined particles of different densities and diameters that is arranged by differential settling to produce a predetermined bulk density;
- and
- a plurality of subsequent applied zones to said first zone, each said applied zone further comprising a mixture of predetermined particles of different shapes, densities and diameters that is arranged by differential settling to result in a respective bulk density, wherein in combination with said first zone produces an object having a desired axial and a desired radial variable density.
A differential settling method for producing a variable density object, comprising:
- providing a container having a curved base and a predetermined cross sectional area;
- providing a fluid medium having a predetermined viscosity and density within said container;
- introducing into said fluid medium, a mixture of desired particles having different shapes, diameters and densities, wherein said particles of said mixture settle at predetermined rates to produce a plurality of zonal densities that vary in an axial and a radial direction;
- removing said object from said fluid medium and said container;
- and
- sectioning off predetermined portions of said zonal densities to produce an object having a desired axial and a desired radial variable density.
