Abstract
The invention relates to mechanical actuators for forming images on a display. The actuators include two mechanically compliant electrodes.

A display apparatus, comprising:
- an actuator including
- a first compliant electrode;
- and
- a second compliant electrode positioned proximate to the first compliant electrode, and being responsive to a voltage applied between the first and second compliant electrodes, to draw the first and second compliant electrodes together;
- and
- a modulator coupled to the actuator to form an image on the display apparatus.

A method of forming an image on a display apparatus, comprising:
- selecting a light modulator;
- providing an actuator comprising first and second mechanically compliant electrodes positioned proximate to one another, wherein the first mechanically compliant electrode couples to a shutter;
- activating the actuator by generating a voltage between the first and second mechanically compliant electrodes, thereby i) deforming the first and second mechanically compliant electrodes to draw them closer together;
- and ii) moving the shutter into or out of an optical path to affect the illumination of a pixel in the image.
