Abstract
The apparatus and method described herein provides for creating multiple spatial patterns, such as magnetic patterns on credit cards. The invention includes storage of information from which patterns may be created, a pattern creation device for creating the spatial patterns, and control whereby the information which is stored is selectively utilized to cause the pattern creation.. This allows multiple desired patterns to be simulated, allowing convenient replacement of a number of separate pattern carrying devices.

An apparatus for providing simulation of multiple sets of spatial patterns for use by a pattern reading device, including in combination:
- a memory for storing data from which said spatial patterns may be reconstructed;
- a programmable spatial pattern creating device capable of reconstructing said spatial patterns.
- a control circuit responsive to an external stimulus to a cause said programmable spatial pattern creating device to reconstruct a known one of said spatial patterns in response to data from said memory.
An apparatus for generating multiple sets of spatial patterns, including in combination:
- a storage device for storing information from which said spatial patterns may be reconstructed;
- a pattern creating device coupled to said storage device to receive at least part of said information;
- a control device operable to determine which of said information is received by said pattern creating device and at a time thereafter causing said pattern creating device to create a pattern in response to said information.
An apparatus for generating multiple sets of spatial patterns, including in combination:
- a storage device for storing information from which said spatial patterns may be reconstructed;
- a pattern creating device coupled to said storage device to receive pattern data created in response to at least part of said information and to create a pattern therefrom;
- a control device operable to determine which of said information is utilized to create said pattern data and pass said pattern data to said pattern creating device.
An apparatus for generating multiple sets of spatial patterns, including in combination:
- a memory for storing binary data from which said spatial patterns may be reconstructed;
- a pattern creating device which receives electronic signals and creates a given one of said patterns in response thereto;
- a processor operable to create said electronic signals in response to a portion of said binary data which portion is selected in response to a select designator provided to said processor by an operator.
An apparatus for generating multiple sets or spatial patterns, including in combination:
- a non-volatile memory for storing associated select designator data, account identifier data, and data from which said spatial patterns may be reconstructed;
- a pattern creating device which receives electronic signals and creates a given one of said patterns in response thereto;
- a processor operable to create said electronic signals in response to a portion of said binary data which portion is selected in response to a given said select designator provided to said processor by an operator, with said processor further operable to provide to said operator a given one of said account identifier data which is associated with said select designator.
An apparatus for generating multiple sets of spatial patterns, including in combination:
- a memory for storing sets of pattern data from which said spatial patterns may be reconstructed and capable of storing associated select designator data, and account identifier data, for at least some of said sets;
- an operator keypad having at least one operator actuated electronic circuit;
- an operator readable display;
- a pattern creating device for responsive to electronic signals to create a given one of said spatial patterns;
- a processor operable to create said electronic signals in response to a given set of said pattern data which set is selected in response to a given said select designator provided to said processor by an operator via said keypad, with said processor further operable to provide to said operator via said display a given one of said account identifier data which is associated with said select designator.

- a storage step, for storing, information from which said spatial patterns may be reconstructed;
- a pattern creating step operating with said storage step to use pattern data created in response to at least part of said information and to create a pattern therefrom;
- a control step operable to determine which of said information is utilized to create said pattern data and pass said pattern data to said pattern creating step.

- an operator input step for an operator to input information
- an operator display step;
- a pattern creating step which receives electronic signals and creates a given one of said patterns in response thereto;
- a processor step operable to create said electronic signals in response to one said set of pattern data which set is selected in response to a given said select designator provided to said processor step by said operator input step, with said processor step further operable to provide to said operator via said display step a given one of said account identifier data which is associated with said select designator.

An apparatus for replacing multiple credit cards which have preprogrammed magnetic strips which carry information unique to the particular account to which they pertain, including in combination:
- a) a group of field generating elements comprising a array, each said element being individually managable to create magnetic flux therein;
- b) an operator input by which an operator may input information;
- c) an operator display by which an operator may receive information;
- d) a memory in which may be stored pattern data in response to which said array may be controlled to generate magnetic field patterns and in which operator select designator related data and account identifiers related data associated with said pattern data may be stored;
- e) a processor operable to receive a select designator from an operator via said operator input and to recall from said memory the stored pattern data associated therewith in order to control said array to generate a desired magnetic pattern and further operable to operate said operator display to provide said account identifier as a message to said operator;
- f) wherein the operator of element b), c), d), and e) may be the same or different entities.
