Abstract
A system and method for policing one or more flows of a data stream of packets associated with differing transmission protocols. The current capacity level for each flow is determined, as is the packet protocol associated with each packet. A packet parameter in the packet that is indicative of the bandwidth consumption of the packet is identified. The packet parameter is converted to a predetermined format if the packet is not associated with a predetermined packet protocol. A common bandwidth capacity test is performed to determine whether the packet is conforming or non-conforming, and is a function of the packet parameter and the current bandwidth capacity level.

A computerized system comprising:
- a networking environment output link having a bandwidth, the networking environment comprising a plurality of end nodes;
- and
- a plurality of flows, each flow being associated with one end node, each flow sharing the bandwidth of the output link proportional in a proportion based on a corresponding adaptive weight based on a predetermined criteria applied at the end node associated with the flow.

A method of policing a protocol data unit, said method comprising:
- retrieving a first dynamic size measure and a second dynamic size measure based on a service level associated with said protocol data unit;
- if said first dynamic size measure is positive, decreasing said first size measure by said size of said protocol data unit;
- if said first dynamic size measure is not positive, but said second dynamic size measure is positive, decreasing said second size measure by said size of said protocol data unit;
- and
- processing said protocol data unit based on whether said first dynamic size measure is positive and whether said second dynamic size measure is positive.

A method comprising:
- setting a plurality of packet type filters so that each filters for a different packet type;
- incrementing a plurality of buckets, each bucket communicatively coupled to a packet type filter of the plurality of filters;
- receiving a packet having a packet type;
- measuring the bucket that is coupled to the packet type filter that filters for the received packet type;
- and
- transmitting the packet if its measured bucket is above a threshold value.

A method of forwarding packets comprising:
- classifying a packet from a plurality of packets according to a classification, wherein the classification is one of a plurality of classifications;
- storing the packet in one of a plurality of queues corresponding to the classification, wherein
- each queue corresponds to one of a plurality of flow behaviors associated with the classification;
- assigning a weighting to said plurality of queues;
- and
- forwarding the packet from said queue according to said weighting.
