Abstract
The present invention provides a method and system for performing in-line error correction in a disk storage system. The system includes an error correction (ECC) module; and a first memory storage device, wherein the first memory storage device and the error correction module simultaneously receive data from a storage disk before being buffered for transfer to a host system. The ECC module provides error correction mask before any data is transferred from the first memory storage device to a second memory buffer.

A disk controller comprising:
- a buffer controller that is located on the disk controller, that communicates with a first memory external to the disk controller, that receives data from a disk formatter, and that regulates data transfer between the first memory and the disk formatter;
- and
- an error correction (ECC) module that receives the data from the disk formatter and that generates an error correction mask for the data, wherein the buffer controller transfers the data to the first memory after the ECC module generates the error correction mask.
An error correction method comprising:
- receiving data from a disk formatter at a buffer controller and an error correction (ECC) module, wherein at least the buffer controller is located on a disk controller;
- generating an error correction mask for the data at the ECC module;
- transferring data from the buffer controller to a first memory that is external to the disk controller after the ECC module generates the error correction mask.
