Abstract
A method and system for managing memory modules or memory devices is disclosed. The memory modules or memory devices are managed by using a microcontroller on the memory module. A user can remotely control the memory module by sending instructions and data to the microcontroller. The microcontroller can cause the measurement of a number of operational parameters of the memory module. The values of the measured operational parameters can be displayed on a display unit that is attached to the memory module or displayed on a screen associated with the host system.

A method
- for managing a memory device, the method comprising:
- using a plurality of sensors on said memory device;
- using a microcontroller in association with said memory device, wherein said microcontroller is adapted for remote modification of operation characteristics of said memory device and for remote collection of information from said memory device;
- and
- communicating with said microcontroller for said remote modification and said remote collection using an available memory space of a corresponding serial presence detect device that is associated with said memory device.
A method for monitoring a memory module, the method comprising using an on-module microcontroller that communicates with a host system through an existing system bus and using an application program running on said host system for requesting and displaying parametric data measured on said memory module and for allowing a user to modify operational settings of said memory module.
A system for monitoring a memory device, the system comprising:
- a microcontroller associated with said memory device;
- a plurality of sensors on said memory device for measuring one or more operation parameters of said memory device;
- a host processor;
- a communication bus adapted for communication between said microcontroller and said host processor;
- and
- an application program running on said host processor for retrieving information from said microcontroller and for sending instructions to said microcontroller.
A system for monitoring a memory device, the system comprising:
- a sensing means for measuring parametric data on said memory device;
- a monitoring means integrated with said memory device for managing said memory device;
- a user interface means for allowing a user to send instructions to and receive data from said monitoring means;
- and
- a communication means for allowing communication between said monitoring means and said user interface means.
