Abstract
A novel process is disclosed for producing Imatinib, using the precursor 2-chloro-4-(3-pyridyl)-pyrimidine, thus improving Imatinib preparation via an alternative synthetic route, avoiding the use of the toxic reagent cyanamide.

A process for preparing Imatinib or an addition salt thereof, wherein the compound 2-chloro-4-(3-pyridyl)-pyrimidine, is used as starting material.
A process for preparing 2-oxo-4-(3-pyridyl)-pyrimidine by reacting 3-dimethylamino-1-pyridin-3-yl-propenone with urea, optionally in the presence of an acid.
