Abstract
Methods are provided for determining the malignancy of cells in a bladder carcinoma sample. Expression patterns of Na,K-ATPase α and β subunits are shown to be associated with recurrence risk in these cancers. Detection of Na,K-ATPase α and β subunits expression in bladder carcinomas provides a useful diagnostic for predicting patient prognosis and probability of drug effectiveness. Na,K-ATPase α and β subunits provide a target for drug screening.
Claims18
A method for analysis of a bladder carcinoma, the method comprising:
- detecting the presence of Na,K-ATPase α and/or β subunit in said carcinoma, wherein presence of high levels of the Na,K-ATPase cc subunit and low levels of β subunit is indicative of increased risk for malignancy.
A method of screening for agents that affect the malignancy of bladder carcinoma, the method comprising:
- contacting a candidate biologically agent with a Na,K-ATPase α and/or β subunit or a cell expressing said Na,K-ATPase α and/or β subunit and determining the effect of said agent.
A method of decreasing the malignancy of a bladder carcinoma, the method comprising:
- enhancing the activity of Na,K-ATPase in said carcinoma.
