Abstract
Systems and methods for managing the distribution and access of data on a pool of storage media are disclosed. The data are managed based on access patterns, storage media activity, and/or health parameters. An access pattern of one or more units of data in a pool of two or more storage media is determined. At least a portion of the one or more units of data are migrated from one storage medium to another storage medium within the pool of two or more storage media based on the access pattern. Systems and methods are also disclosed for storing data on several different disk storage sets according to different qualities.
Claims20
A method for managing data in a disk pool, comprising:
- determining an accessibility of each portion of the data;
- and
- based on the accessibility, providing each portion of the data on an active disk in the disk pool or an inactive disk in the disk pool.
A method of managing a disk pool that stored data, comprising:
- tracking access patterns of each portion of the stored data;
- determining an accessibility of each portion of the data based on the access pattern of each portion;
- and
- based on the accessibility, providing each portion of the data on an active disk in the disk pool or an inactive disk in the disk pool.
A method, comprising:
- providing an original data file of a first quality;
- generating a second version of the data file of a second quality lower than the first quality;
- storing the original data file on one or more disks that are put to sleep;
- and
- storing the second version of the data file on one or more disks that are kept active.
A data management system, comprising:
- a first set of one or more disks storing a original version of a data file having a first quality;
- and
- a second set of one or more disks storing a second version of the data file having a second quality lower than the first quality.
