A method of antagonizing an arginine vasopressin receptor, comprising:
- contacting the arginine vasopressin receptor with a composition comprising:
- a compound of formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof:
- wherein the ring D represents phenylene or pyridinediyl;
- X and Y may be the same or different and each represents CH or N;
- and R1, R2 and R3 may be the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a halogen, or a lower alkyl;
- and
- a pharmaceutical carrier or excipient.

A method of treating heart failure or hyponatremia, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a composition comprising:
- a compound of formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof:
