Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases are represented by two idiopathic disorders, which include ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis is restricted to the colon and involves uncertain and inflammation of the lining (mucosa) of the large intestine. Crohn's disease, on the other hand, can involve the mucosa of the small and/or large intestine and may involve deeper layers of the bowel wall. The present invention contains N-acetylcysteine disposed in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for oral or rectal delivery for treating such inflammatory bowel diseases by topical application within the colon.
Claims4

- administering to the mammal a therapeutically-effective amount of a composition comprising N-acetylcysteine, or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt or ester thereof, disposed in a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier suitable for rectal delivery to a colon of the mammal wherein the composition is administered to the mammal by rectal delivery and causes topical application of the composition within the colon.
A method of treating or inhibiting an inflammatory bowel disease or other inflammatory disease in a mammal, comprising:
- administering to the mammal a therapeutically-effective amount of a composition comprising N-acetylsysteine, or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt or ester thereof, disposed in a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier suitable for oral delivery wherein the composition is administered to the mammal by oral delivery and causes topical application of the composition within a colon or small intestine of the mammal.
