Abstract
A bearing stiff plate pedestal with cylindrical bore and a separate bearing with shimmed saddle blocks that mate to the bore to permit accurate alignment and with self-aligning Babbitted tilting pad bearings to replace existing bearing spring plates arrangements. A method wherein the bearing stiff plate pedestal is fashioned initially as a drill fixture by drilling mounting holes in the stiff plate pedestal with the diameter of a tap drill for hold down bolts, to permit drilling and tapping holes in the pedestal base plate at proper locations. Subsequently, the mounting holes are enlarged to form clearance holes, and the stiff plate pedestal is mounted, aligned, and bolted into place.
Claims33
The method of replacing a bearing spring plate pedestal welded to a floor plate, with a replacement bearing plate pedestal, comprising machining a projecting part of said welded spring plate pedestal until no more than a short stub remains, installing over said stub area a template with a pattern of holes coincident with a hole pattern in a replacement plate foot to receive mounting screws, drilling holes in said floor plate in accordance with said template hole pattern, tapping said holes, positioning said replacement bearing plate pedestal on said floor plate with said plate foot holes aligned with said tapped floor plate holes, and installing said mounting screws through said plate foot holes and into said tapped floor plate holes.
The method of replacing a bearing spring plate pedestal with a bearing stiff plate pedestal, comprising machining a projecting part of said spring plate pedestal and a surrounding area of a pedestal base plate to flatness, and securing to said base plate said bearing stiff plate pedestal.
The method of replacing a bearing spring plate pedestal with a bearing stiff plate pedestal, part of said spring plate projecting from a pedestal base plate, comprising machining said spring plate to project a short distance, and a surrounding area of said pedestal base to flatness, forming in an undersurface of said bearing stiff plate pedestal a channel wide and deep enough to admit and bridge said projecting part, and securing said stiff plate pedestal to said base plate.
The method of replacing, with a bearing stiff plate pedestal, a bearing spring plate pedestal, part of which spring plate projects from a pedestal base plate, comprising machining the projecting plate part, if necessary, to a short height, forming in an undersurface of said bearing stiff pedestal a channel wide and deep enough to admit and bridge said projecting part, adjusting said undersurface to a desired level with respect to said pedestal base plate, applying to a surface of said pedestal base plate in the area to which said bearing stiff plate pedestal is to be mounted, an epoxy, and securing to said base plate said bearing stiff plate pedestal bridging said projecting part.
The method of installing a bearing stiff plate pedestal and bearing of a turbine, either a high pressure turbine or a low pressure turbine by replacing a bearing, mating upper bearing housing, mating yoke, and mating bearing spring plate pedestals, said bearing spring plates projecting from a pedestal base plate, comprising removing for the affected turbine, at least an outer pedestal cover, an upper bearing housing, an upper half of a turbine shaft bearing, a rotor of the affected turbine, a lower half of the turbine shaft bearing, and portions of the bearing spring plates, leaving remaining portions of the bearing spring plates and an upper surface of the pedestal base plate around the remaining parts of the pedestal spring plates exposed, so that the projecting remaining parts of the bearing spring plates and areas around them can be machined, machining the projecting remaining parts of the bearing spring plates to a condition either flush with the surrounding area or to a short height, thereafter, installing said bearing stiff plate pedestal fashioned as a drill fixture over the exposed surface of the bearing spring plate and the surrounding base plate, aligning the bearing stiff plate pedestal in a suitable manner, one manner being to mount a stub shaft on the end of the adjacent turbine rotor coupling hub, when it exists, and aligning the bore of the bearing stiff plate pedestal to the stub shaft, drilling and tapping holes in said pedestal base plate in conformance with the hole pattern in said bearing stiff plate pedestal fashioned as a drill fixture, removing said bearing stiff plate pedestal fashioned as a drill fixture, opening said holes in said bearing stiff plate pedestal sufficient to be clearance holes, if necessary or desirable, applying epoxy to said pedestal base plate in areas around said bearing spring plate pedestals, setting in place said new bearing stiff plate pedestal, realigning the bearing stiff plate pedestal as before, installing and tightening the hold down bolts, if epoxy has been used, after the epoxy has hardened, installing a bearing lower half with shimmed saddle blocks and ears, installing the affected turbine rotor shaft, bearing upper half with ears, verifying alignment of the rotors and bearings, and if necessary, adjusting the shim plates of the saddle blocks and the shim plates under the ears to obtain proper alignment, tightening the bolts through the bearing ears to retain tightly the bearing in the bearing stiff plate pedestal, coupling the affected and adjacent turbine rotors, if an adjacent turbine rotor exists, and installing said outer pedestal cover.
A bearing stiff plate pedestal comprising a stiff plate with two mounting feet machined into the plate, one projecting transversely from either side of said plate, said feet seating onto a base of an outer pedestal housing to mount said stiff plate in approximately the same location from which an original spring plate pedestal was removed.
