Abstract
The present invention provides a new method and a new system for controlling the capacity usage of a logically partitioned data processing system comprising physical data processing resources that are divided into multiple logical partitions, wherein the capacity of the logical partitions is monitored to control the consumption of the physical data processing resources. The new method and the system are characterized in that at least one group of logical partitions is defined that is managed towards a common capacity group limit.
Claims20
A method for controlling capacity usage in a logically partitioned data processing system comprising physical data processing resources that are divided into multiple logical partitions, wherein usage of said resources by said partitions is monitored to control consumption of said resources, said method comprising the steps of:
- defining at least one group of logical partitions that is managed towards a group capacity limit;
- collecting data on consumption of said physical data processing resources by the partitions in said group;
- and
- determining from said data whether the consumption of said resources by a partition in the group exceeds an individual capacity limit defined for that partition.
A system for controlling capacity usage in a logically partitioned data processing system comprising physical data processing resources that are divided into multiple logical partitions, wherein usage of said resources by said partitions is monitored to control consumption of said resources, wherein at least one group of logical partitions is defined that is managed towards a group capacity limit, wherein a partition manager is responsible for mapping the logical partitions to the physical data processing resources, wherein capacity consumed by each logical partition is constantly monitored in order to allow a capacity manager to control consumption by a logical partition, wherein the capacity manager communicates with the partition manager about the utilization and consumption of the physical data processing resources.
A method for controlling capacity usage in a logically partitioned data processing system comprising physical data processing resources that are divided into multiple logical partitions, wherein usage of said resources by said partitions is monitored to control consumption of said resources, said method comprising the steps of:
- defining at least one group of logical partitions that is managed towards a group capacity limit;
- collecting data on consumption of said physical data processing resources by the partitions in said group;
- determining from said data whether the consumption of said resources by a partition in the group exceeds an individual capacity limit defined for that partition;
- and
- if the consumption of said resources by said partition exceeds said individual capacity limit, assigning to the partition a share of the group capacity limit that is not being used by other partitions in said group.
