Abstract
Techniques are provided to construct and use user-interest sensitive indicators of search results. A set of documents is determined based on one or more search terms. Passages within each selected document are identified based on the search terms. Condensation transformations applied to the passages to preferentially retain elements of the passage based on the search terms and user interest information. The resultant indicator is provides a user-interest sensitive signal of the meaning of the passage.

A method of constructing user-interest sensitive search result indicators comprising the steps of:
- determining search terms;
- determining user interest information;
- determining a set of at least one documents based on the search terms;
- determining passages from each document in the set of at least one documents based on the search terms and the user interest information;
- determining condensation transformations;
- and
- determining search result indicators for each passage of the at least one document, based on the search terms, the user interest information and the condensation transformations.
A method of constructing user-interest sensitive search result indicators comprising the steps of:
- determining search terms;
- determining user interest information;
- determining a set of at least one documents based on the search terms;
- determining passages from each document in the set of at least one documents based on the search terms and the user interest information;
- determining condensation transformations in which the condensation transformations are applied to the meaning structures based on meaning distortion constraints;
- and
- determining search result indicators for each passage of the at least one document, based on the search terms, the user interest information and the condensation transformations.
A system for constructing user-interest sensitive search result indicators comprising:
- an input/output circuit for entering search terms;
- a processor that retrieves user interest information from a memory;
- determines a set of at least one documents based on the search terms;
- determines passages from each document in the set of at least one documents based on the search terms and the user interest information;
- determines condensation transformations;
- and
- determines search result indicators for each passage of the at least one document, based on the search terms, the user interest information and the condensation transformations.
A user-interest sensitive search interface for displaying the user-interest sensitive indicators of claim 32.
A user-interest sensitive indicator of search results comprising:
- information that signals the meaning of at least one document found by search wherein the information includes a user-interest sensitive condensation of at least one passage of the at least one document;
- and
- a link identifying the at least one document.
A carrier wave encoded to transmit a control program, useable to
- program a computer for constructing user-interest sensitive search result indicators, to a device for executing the program, the control program comprising:
- instructions for determining search terms;
- instructions for determining user interest information;
- instructions for determining a set of at least one documents based on the search terms;
- instructions for determining passages from each document in the set of at least one documents based on the search terms and the user interest information;
- instructions for determining condensation transformations;
- and
- instructions for determining search result indicators for each passage of the at least one document, based on the search terms, the user interest information and the condensation transformations.
Computer readable storage medium comprising:
