A compound of Formula (I), or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof:

• wherein:
• A is a zinc ligand or zinc ligand bearing moiety selected from the group consisting of:
• R is hydrogen or lower alkyl;
• R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl;
• R2 is hydrogen, or lower alkyl;
• R3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl;
• R4 is lower alkyl, substituted lower alkyl, cycloalkyl-(CH2)w—, aryl-(CH2)n—, substituted aryl-(CH2)w— or heteroaryl-(CH2)w—;
• R5 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, substituted lower alkyl, cycloalkyl-(CH2)x—, aryl-(CH2)x—, substituted aryl-(CH2)x—, or heteroaryl-(CH2)x—;
• R6 is hydrogen;
• R8 and R9 are hydrogen;
• R11 is hydrogen or lower alkyl;
• D is —COOH;
• E is hydrogen, —COOH, —CONH2, —CONH(lower alkyl), —CON(lower alkyl)2, —CO—NH(CH)CH2OHCOOH, —CH2COOH, CH2OH, —CH2CH2OH, or —COOR16;
• R16 is as previously defined for R8 and R9;
• C is carbon;
• H is hydrogen;
• O is oxygen;
• N is nitrogen;
• S is sulfur;
• P is phosphorus;
• v is zero or one;
• w is zero or an integer ranging from 1 to 4;
• and
• x is an integer ranging from 0 to 4;
• with the provisos that when “A” is R8O(CO)CHR5—, R, R1, R3, R5 and E are H, B is absent, D is —COOH, v is 0, and R4 is naphthyl;
• that when “A” is HO—NHCOCHR5—, R4 may not be carboxymethyl [—CH2COOH];
• and that when “A” is (R9O)2POCHR5—, R, R1, R3 and R9 are H, R4 is 3-indolylmethyl, R5 is 2-phenylethyl, B is NH, D and E are —COOH and v is 0.
