Abstract
A communication system having first and second states for use with a shared transmission line composed of at least two conductors and composed of first and second transmission line segments connected to each other at a single connection point. In the first state, a termination is coupled to the single connection point and is operative to at least attenuate a signal propagated between the first and second segments. In the second state, a driver is coupled to the connection point and is operative to conduct a signal over the first and second segments.
Claims14
A method for signal termination with a device having terminating and transmitting states, said method comprising:
- connecting the device to a connection point of a two-conductor transmission line;
- providing a termination circuit constructed for terminating a signal propagated over the two-conductor transmission line;
- providing a first driver operative to conduct a signal over the two-conductor transmission line, the first driver having an input port selectively couplable to a signal source doe coupling the signal source to the transmission line, and an output port;
- and
- placing the device in a selected one of:
- a terminating state in which said termination circuit is coupled to the connection point;
- and a transmitting state in which the first driver output port is coupled to the connection point.
A device for use with a two-conductor transmission line having a connection point for connection to said device, said device comprising:
- a connection port for connecting to the connection point of the two-conductor transmission line;
- a termination circuit selectively couplable to said connection port and constructed for terminating a signal propagated over the two-conductor transmission line when said device is connected to said connection point;
- and
- a sensor having sensor inputs coupled to said connection port, and a sensor output, said sensor being operative for sensing a data signal at said connection port and for supplying to said sensor output a signal that is a function of the data signal that is sensed,
- wherein said device has a first state in which said termination circuit is coupled to said connection port and a second state in which said termination circuit is not coupled to said connection port.
A communication system having first and second states for use with a shared transmission line composed of at least two conductors, said system comprising:
- first and second transmission line segments of the shared transmission line connected to each other at a single connection point;
- a termination device selectively couplable to said single connection point and, when coupled to said single connection point, operative to at least attenuate a signal propagated between said first and second segments of the shared transmission line;
- and
- a sensor having sensor inputs coupled to said connection point, and a sensor output, said sensor being operative for sensing a signal at said connection point and for supplying to said sensor output a signal that is a representation of the signal that is sensed,
- wherein in the first state a termination device is coupled to the single connection point, and in the second state the termination device is decoupled from the single connection point.
