Abstract
A restraint system for restraining a recumbent occupant of a vehicle seat surface includes a member being selectively movable between a stowed position and a deployed position. The member, when in the deployed position, extends higher than the seat surface and is configured to exert a reaction force on the recumbent occupant to retain the occupant above the seat surface in the event of a vehicle impact.
Claims14
A seat assembly for a vehicle, comprising:
- a seat including an occupiable surface that is configured to be generally horizontally oriented when the seat assembly is installed in the vehicle, the occupiable surface being sufficiently sized to support a generally horizontally-oriented occupant;
- at least one restraint member being selectively movable between a stowed position and a deployed position;
- said at least one restraint member being sufficiently positioned to exert a reaction force on the occupant in the event of a vehicle impact and thereby retain the occupant above the occupiable surface when in the deployed position.
A vehicle comprising:
- a seat assembly defining an occupiable surface sufficiently sized to accommodate a recumbent occupant thereon, the occupiable surface having a forward edge and a rearward edge;
- a restraint member configured to selectively extend higher than the forward edge of the occupiable surface and sufficiently positioned to exert a reaction force on a recumbent occupant of the occupiable surface during a frontal impact to the vehicle.
A seat assembly for use in a vehicle, the seat assembly comprising:
- a seat having a seatback portion and a lower seat portion;
- said lower seat portion defining an occupiable surface;
- said seat being connectable in the vehicle such that the occupiable surface is generally horizontal and is characterized by a forward edge and a rearward edge;
- a barrier being selectively positionable adjacent the forward edge, extending substantially the entire length of the occupiable surface, and sufficiently configured to exert a rearward reaction force on an occupant of the seat to retain the occupant above the occupiable surface in the event of an impact to the vehicle.
