Abstract
A component of a fluid handling system has a wall that separates an interior of the component from an exterior of the component. A channel passes completely through the wall for receiving a conduit therein. A trough is formed on an exterior of the component. A sidewall of the trough has an opening that aligns with the channel. The opening is for receiving the conduit therethrough before the channel receives the conduit.

- a channel passing completely through the first wall;
- a step protruding from an outer surface of the first wall and terminating at a second wall that extends from the step in opposition to the first wall;
- and
- a sleeve passing through the second wall, traversing the step, and extending into the first wall so as to align with the channel, the sleeve adapted to receive a conduit therein and adapted to be welded to the conduit using a beam of light, wherein the sleeve has different light absorption properties than the conduit.
A component of a fluid handling system, comprising:
- a wall that separates an interior of the component from an exterior of the component;
- a channel passing completely through the wall;
- and
- a sleeve passing through the channel and protruding from an exterior of the wall, the sleeve adapted to receive a conduit therein and adapted to be welded to the conduit using a beam of light, wherein the sleeve has different light absorption properties than the conduit.
A component of a fluid handling system, comprising:
- a wall that separates an interior of the component from an exterior of the component;
- a channel passing completely through the wall for receiving a conduit therein;
- and
- a trough formed on an exterior of the component;
- wherein a sidewall of the trough has an opening that aligns with the channel, wherein the opening is for receiving the conduit therethrough before the channel receives the conduit;
- wherein a base of the trough has a groove that extends between the sidewall and the wall that separates an interior of the component from an exterior of the component, the groove aligned with the channel and the opening in the sidewall, the groove adapted to receive a conduit therein so that the groove contains a portion of the conduit;
- and
- wherein the component is an absorber of light and the conduit is substantially transparent to the light.
A sleeve comprising:
- a wall having a slot therein that opens into an interior bore of the sleeve;
- wherein the bore is for receiving a conduit therein;
- and
- wherein the slot is for passing light into the sleeve and through the conduit to an interior surface of the bore when the conduit is inserted in the sleeve so that the light can weld the conduit to the interior surface of the bore.
A method of welding a sleeve to a conduit that is disposed within the sleeve, comprising:
- passing a beam of light through a slot in the sleeve that exposes the conduit;
- directing the light through the conduit and onto an interior surface of the sleeve;
- and
- absorbing the light into the sleeve from the interior surface of the sleeve for heating the sleeve.
A method of welding a sleeve to a conduit that is disposed within the sleeve, comprising:
- passing a first portion of a beam of light through a slot in the sleeve that exposes the conduit;
- directing a second portion of the beam of light onto an exterior portion of the sleeve, while passing the first portion of the beam of light through the slot;
- directing the first portion of the beam of light through the conduit and onto an interior surface of the sleeve;
- and
- absorbing the first portion of the beam of light into the sleeve from the interior surface of the sleeve and absorbing the second portion of the beam of light into the sleeve from the exterior surface of the sleeve for heating the sleeve, wherein heating the sleeve produces molten sleeve material and molten conduit material at an interface between the sleeve and conduit.
A method of welding a sleeve to a conduit that is disposed within the sleeve, comprising:
- directing a beam of light through the sleeve and onto an exterior surface of the conduit;
- and
- absorbing the light into the conduit from the exterior surface of the conduit for heating the conduit.
A method for connecting a conduit to a component of a fluid handling system, comprising:
- disposing the conduit in a sleeve of the component, wherein the sleeve is disposed in a trough formed on an exterior of the component and passes though a sidewall of the trough and extends into a wall of the component that separates an interior of the component from an interior of the trough and that is opposite the sidewall of the trough, wherein the sleeve aligns with a channel passing completely through the wall of the component;
- disposing the conduit within the sleeve;
- and
- welding the conduit to an interior of the sleeve using a beam of light.
A method for connecting a conduit to a component of a fluid handling system, comprising:
- disposing a conduit within a channel that passes completely through a wall of the component that separates an interior of the component from an exterior of the component;
- and
- absorbing light directed at the wall within the wall for heating the wall adjacent the channel to produce molten wall material and molten conduit material at an interface between an interior surface of the channel and the conduit for welding the conduit to the interior surface of the channel.
A method for connecting a conduit to a component of a fluid handling system, comprising:
- disposing a conduit within a sleeve that passes completely through a portion of a wall of the component that separates an interior of the component from an exterior of the component and that protrudes from an exterior of the wall;
- absorbing a first portion of a light beam within the conduit adjacent to the portion of the wall to heat the conduit and the sleeve adjacent to the portion of the wall to weld the conduit to the sleeve adjacent the portion of the wall;
