Abstract
A technique to adjust a processor's operating voltage dynamically while preventing a user from placing the processor into a harmful operating voltage state in relation to the core/bus frequency ratio of the processor. More particularly, embodiments of the invention relate to a technique to control the operating voltage of the processor as a function of the processor's bus and/or core clock frequency.
Claims30
An apparatus comprising:
- second means for adjusting a processor's operating voltage in response to a change in the processor's core and/or bus clock frequency, the second means preventing a user from adjusting the operating voltage independently of the core and/or bus clock frequency.
A method comprising:
- detecting a change in a ratio between a processor's core clock frequency and a frequency of a bus with which the processor communicates with other agents in a computer system (core/bus ratio);
- dynamically adjusting the processor's operating voltage in response to detecting the change in the core/bus ratio according to a linear equation wherein the core/bus ratio is a variable.
A system comprising:
- a bus to communicate information among a plurality of devices;
- a processor coupled to the bus, the processor including logic to dynamically change the voltage at which the processor is to function (operating voltage) in response to a change in the ratio of the processor core frequency and the bus frequency (core/bus ratio) without rebooting the processor and in a manner so as to prevent a user from placing the core/bus frequency and operating voltage combination that may harm the processor.
A processor comprising:
- first logic to determine a ratio between a frequency at which the processor core clock is to be set and a frequency at which a bus coupled to the processor is to be set (core/bus ratio);
- second logic to adjust the processor's operating voltage in response to the first logic determining the core/bus ratio and for preventing a user from adjusting the operating voltage.
