Abstract
Various embodiments of a method, apparatus and article of manufacture to manage an index are provided. A circular index, having an index size, is provided. The circular index stores information to reference data in a sequential list. Accesses to the index and the list are monitored to provide at least one performance indicator. The performance indicator represents an effect of the index on accessing items in the list. The index size is changed based on the at least one performance indicator. The monitoring of the accesses and the changing of the index size are repeated.
Claims30
A method of managing an index, comprising:
- providing a circular index to store information to reference data in a sequential list, said index having an index size;
- monitoring accesses to said index and to said list to provide at least one performance indicator, said at least one performance indicator representing an effect of the index on accessing items in said list;
- changing said index size based on said at least one performance indicator;
- and
- repeating said monitoring and changing.
An article of manufacture comprising a computer usable medium embodying one or more instructions executable by a computer for performing a method of managing an index, said method comprising;
- providing a circular index to store information to reference data in a sequential list, said index having an index size;
- monitoring accesses to said index and to said list to provide at least one performance indicator, said at least one performance indicator representing an effect of the index on accessing items in said list;
- changing said index size based on said at least one performance indicator;
- and
- repeating said monitoring and changing.
An apparatus for managing an index, comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- a memory storing one or more instructions that:
- provide a circular index to store information to reference data in a sequential list, said index having an index size;
- monitor accesses to said index and to said list to provide at least one performance indicator, said at least one performance indicator representing an effect of the index on accessing items in said list;
- change said index size based on said at least one performance indicator;
- and
- repeat said one or more instructions that monitor and change.
