Abstract
A fuel property adaptive control system for controlling the performance of an engine, such as an internal combustion engine. An on-board fuel classifier classifies the fuel that the engine is running. Based on stored properties for that fuel, the system selects optimal engine control parameters.
Claims20
A fuel classifier for determining the type of fuel being consumed by an engine, comprising:
- a neural network for receiving input data from one or more of the group of:
- engine inputs, engine operating conditions, and engine outputs, and for generating fuel type data based on the input data;
- wherein the input data is measured or derived from sensors associated with the engine;
- and
- a selector for storing control parameters associated with each of a number of fuel types, and for matching the fuel properties to the fuel type data.
2 more elements
An engine control system for controlling engine operations, based on the fuel type being consumed by an engine, comprising:
- a fuel classifier for receiving input data from one or more of the group of:
- engine inputs, engine operating conditions, and engine outputs, and for generating fuel type data based on the input data;
- wherein the input data is measured or derived from sensors associated with the engine;
- a selector for storing a set of control parameters associated with each fuel type, and for matching the fuel type data to the control parameters;
- and
- a controller for receiving the control parameters from the selector and for generating engine control signals based on the control parameters.
3 more elements
A method of classifying fuels, comprising:
- identifying fuel properties that are detectable from engine input data;
- and
- using a fuel classifier to receive engine input data associated with the detectable fuel properties and to output a fuel type based on the input data.
