A compression anastomotic device for reconstruction of a tubular body lumen includes a pair of interconnectable open center compression rings or discs adapted to form a closed loop anastomotic ring in the reconstructed hollow lumen. The anastomotic ring defines an anastomotic plane, wherein the anastomotic ring is non-circular in plan view (i.e. within the plane), and wherein the compression rings or discs have a dimension greater in one direction within the anastomosis plane than in an orthogonal direction in the anastomosis plane, whereby the greater dimension defines a long axis for the compression rings or discs. The anastomotic apparatus may be passed through the body lumen with the long axis of the rings of the anastomotic device generally parallel with the axis of the tubular body lumen to ease the insertion or withdrawal of the device, and to provide a more naturally shaped anastomosis.
