Abstract
An electrolyte includes a lithium salt, a non-aqueous organic solvent, gamma-butyrolactone and halogenated toluene represented by the following formula 1: wherein X represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br and I, and n represents an integer of 1 to 5. The lithium ion secondary battery including the electrolyte provides improved safety under overcharge and high-temperature storage conditions.

An electrolyte for a lithium ion secondary battery, comprising:
- a lithium salt;
- a non-aqueous organic solvent;
- gamma-butyrolactone;
- and
- halogenated toluene represented by Formula 1:
- wherein X represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br and I, and n represents an integer of 1 to 5.

A lithium ion secondary battery, comprising:
- a cathode including a cathode active material capable of reversibly intercalating and deintercalating a lithium ion;
- an anode including an anode active material capable of reversibly intercalating and deintercalating a lithium ion;
- a separator disposed between the cathode and the anode;
- and
- an electrolyte comprising:
- a non-aqueous organic solvent;
- a lithium salt;
- gamma-butyrolactone;
- and
- halogenated toluene represented by Formula 1:
- wherein X represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br and I, and n represents an integer of 1 to 5.
