Abstract
Additives comprising dispersed silica nanoparticles are disclosed. The silica nanoparticles are dispersed in an aminoplast, such as a modified aminoplast formed from the reaction between an aminoplast, a modifying component, and optionally a siloxane. The resulting additives can be added to coating compositions to provide improved mar and/or scratch resistance.
Claims29
An additive comprising a mixture of:
- a) an aminoplast;
- and
- b) silica particles having an average particle size below one micron dispersed in organic solvent,
- wherein the aminoplast is present in an amount sufficient to disperse the silica in the resulting mixture, and
- wherein the aminoplast is a modified aminoplast formed from the reaction between:
- i) the aminoplast;
- and ii) a modifying component.
