Abstract
The present invention is directed to a MIG welding machine having a 115 volt inverter. Incorporation of the 115 volt inverter into the MIG welding power source reduces the weight of the power source thereby increasing its portability. The power source may include a power factor correction circuit to provide a near-unity power factor such that output power of the inverter is more efficiently provided. Additionally, the 115 volt inverter is constructed such that for short periods of time, the inverter may output power at a level that exceeds its power rating.
Claims20
A method of controlling output of a MIG welding power source, the method comprising the steps of:
- detecting a prolonged short circuit at a weld;
- increasing output current at a first ramp rate so as to clear the prolonged short circuit;
- and
- increasing output current at a second ramp rate once the output current reaches a pre-set threshold.
A power source to deliver power for a MIG welding process, the power source comprising:
- a power conditioner that receives a row power input and output a power suitable for MIG welding;
- and
- a controller that receives voltage feedback from a weld and configured to:
- detect a prolonged short at the weld;
- increase an output current at the weld at a first ramp rate to clean the prolonged short;
- and
- increase the output current at the weld at a second ramp rate once the output current reaches a pre-set threshold.
A MIG welding system comprising:
- a power source;
- a wire feeder connected to the power source;
- and
- an output current regulator that detects a prolonged short at a weld and responsive thereto causes the power source to deliver power to the weld with a short clearing output current and if the short does not clear then shuts-down power delivery by the power source.
