Coulomb friction damped disc brake rotors

A Coulomb friction damped disc brake rotor, comprising:

• at least one rotor cheek having at least one externally disposed braking surface;
• a slot formed in said at least one rotor cheek;
• and
• an insert disposed within said slot, said insert having opposed sides, wherein said insert is substantially coextensive with said at least one braking surface;
• wherein an interfacial boundary exists respectively at each of the opposed sides of said insert;
• and
• wherein each interfacial boundary provides a mechanically distinguishable surface boundary between two surfaces which are in mutual contact such that a state of Coulomb friction exists therebetween.

A Coulomb friction damped disc brake rotor, comprising:

• at least one rotor cheek having at least one externally disposed braking surface;
• an interstice formed in said rotor cheek, said interstice having opposed sides, wherein said interstice is substantially coextensive with said at least one braking surface;
• wherein an interfacial boundary comprises each of the opposed sides of said interstice;
• and
• wherein said interfacial boundary provides a mechanically distinguishable surface boundary between two surfaces which are in mutual contact such that a state of Coulomb friction exists therebetween.

A method for manufacturing a Coulomb friction damped disc brake rotor, comprising the steps of:

• providing at least one rotor cheek having at least one externally disposed braking surface;
• forming at least one slot in the at least one rotor cheek;
• and
• disposing an insert respectively in each slot, wherein each insert is substantially coextensive with the at least one braking surface;
• wherein each insert provides at least one interfacial boundary, the interfacial boundary providing a mechanically distinguishable surface boundary between two surfaces which are in mutual contact such that a state of Coulomb friction exists therebetween.

A method for manufacturing a Coulomb friction damped disc brake rotor, comprising the steps of:

• providing at least one rotor cheek having at least one externally disposed braking surface;
• and
• forming at least one interstice in the at least one rotor cheek, wherein the at least one interstice is substantially coextensive with the at least one braking surface;
• wherein the at least one interstice provides at least one interfacial boundary, the interfacial boundary providing a mechanically distinguishable surface boundary between two surfaces which are in mutual contact such that a state of Coulomb friction exists therebetween.

A method for manufacturing a Coulomb friction damped disc brake rotor, comprising the steps of:

• providing at least one rotor cheek having at least one externally disposed braking surface;
• forming at least one slot in the at least one rotor cheek, wherein the at least one slot is substantially coextensive with the at least one braking surface;
• and
• winding a filament into each slot to thereby form an insert respectively in each slot, wherein each insert is substantially coextensive with the at least one braking surface;
• wherein the insert provides at least one interfacial boundary, the interfacial boundary providing a mechanically distinguishable surface boundary between two surfaces which are in mutual contact such that a state of Coulomb friction exists therebetween.

A method for manufacturing a Coulomb friction damped disc brake rotor, comprising the steps of:

• providing at least one insert;
• and
• forming a disc brake rotor, wherein a rotor cheek of the disc brake rotor is formed over the at least one insert, wherein the rotor cheek has at least one braking surface, and wherein the at least one insert is substantially coextensive with the at least one braking surface;
• wherein the at least one insert provides at least two interfacial boundaries, each interfacial boundary providing a mechanically distinguishable surface boundary between two surfaces which are in mutual contact such that a state of Coulomb friction exists therebetween.

A method for manufacturing a damped article, comprising the steps of:

• forming at least one slot in the article;
• and
• disposing a material into the slot, wherein the material provides an insert of the slot;
• wherein the insert provides at least one interfacial boundary, the interfacial boundary providing a mechanically distinguishable surface boundary between two surfaces which are in mutual contact such that a state of Coulomb friction exists therebetween;
• and
• wherein said step of disposing comprises a disposing step selected from the group comprising:
• molding a metal material into the at least one slot;
• molding a polymer material into the at least one slot;
• molding a ceramic paste material into the at least one slot;
• and compacting a metal powder into the at least one slot, and heating the metal material to thereby cause the powder material to coalesce into a solid body.

A method for manufacturing a damped article, comprising the steps of:

• providing at least one insert;
• and
• forming the article, wherein the article is formed over the at least one insert;
• wherein the at least one insert provides at least one interfacial boundary, the interfacial boundary providing a mechanically distinguishable surface boundary between two surfaces which are in mutual contact such that a state of Coulomb friction exists therebetween.
